ACADEMICS
At DPHS, academics form the core of our mission: to grow confident, capable, and curious learners ready for high school and life beyond.
We offer a dynamic academic programme from Grade R to Grade 7, rooted in foundation-building, critical thinking, and personalised learning. Every subject is taught with intent not just to tick curriculum boxes, but to ignite interest and help boys connect learning to the world around them.
Gr R: Reception Unit
Our youngest learners embark on their educational journey in a warm, nurturing and exploratory play-based environment. Emphasis is placed on developing social confidence, school readiness and essential literacy and numeracy foundations through meaningful play, creative expression, movement and guided discovery.
Specialist subjects include: Music, Drama, Computers, Dance, isiZulu, Swimming and Ball Skills.
Junior Primary (Grades 1–3)
The Junior Primary phase builds strong academic foundations. Through a carefully scaffolded approach, boys are introduced to reading, writing, mathematics, and basic science, while developing independence and confidence in the classroom.
Specialist subjects include: Music, Drama, Visual Art, PE, IT, isiZulu, Afrikaans, and Media Studies.
Senior Primary (Grades 4–7)
In Senior Primary, boys are exposed to a broad, structured academic programme with increased emphasis on subject depth, responsibility, and assessment preparation.
New subjects are introduced (e.g. Natural Sciences, EMS), and formal exams begin in Grade 6.
All learners receive classroom support, and where necessary, are guided by our Learning Support Centre, which works closely with teachers and families.
Specialist Teaching Across the School
This integrated model gives boys early exposure to the tools, language, and logic of multiple disciplines laying the groundwork for high school success.
At DPHS, we believe every boy can learn and it’s our job to give him the environment, attention, and inspiration to do so.
