SENIOR PRIMARY AT DPHS
The Senior Primary Phase at Durban Preparatory High School marks a transformative time in a boy’s educational journey, a time for greater independence, academic development, leadership and personal growth. From Grade 4 to Grade 7, Prep boys evolve into critical thinkers, responsible peers, and well-rounded individuals who are ready for high school and beyond. This phase is guided by Mr Ross Bedford (Deputy Headmaster & Senior Primary Phase Leader) and a team of committed educators who ensure that each boy is supported, challenged and celebrated during these formative years.
GRADE 4: A CONFIDENT START TO SENIOR PRIMARY
Grade 4 is the bridge between Junior and Senior Primary. Learners take on greater academic responsibility and begin navigating a more structured school day. This is the year where new subjects like Natural Sciences and Social Sciences are introduced and learners experience quantitative assessments (marks and formal tests) for the first time.
HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:
• Countries & Cultures Day – a project-based celebration of global diversity
• Guest speakers and themed excursions
Throughout the year, boys learn to read fluently, work with numbers confidently and develop key life and social skills. The Grade 4 year includes exciting excursions, galas, sports days and assembly performances, reinforcing the joy of learning in a dynamic and stimulating environment.
GRADE 5: CONSOLIDATION AND EXPLORATION
In Grade 5, boys consolidate their learning while becoming more self-managed in both academics and co-curricular life. Streaming begins for Mathematics and English, ensuring learners receive appropriate support or extension where needed. All boys complete the same curriculum and write the same assessments.
EXPERIENCES INCLUDE:
• Overnight trip to Tala Game Reserve for wildlife education and team-building
• Hands-on projects exploring Ancient Civilizations
• Life skills workshops on digital safety, bullying awareness and social development
GRADE 6: ACADEMIC GEARING UP & MENTORSHIP
Grade 6 is a pivotal year of growth. Boys write their first formal exams in June and November, preparing them for future academic rigour. Their academic performance this year plays an important role in high school applications. Leadership expectations rise, with boys expected to set the tone for younger learners. The year includes specialist teaching across more subjects and deeper immersion in digital, scientific and creative learning.
GRADE 7: LEADERSHIP, LEGACY & LASTING MEMORIES
Grade 7 is the pinnacle of a boy’s Prep journey - a year to lead, inspire and make memories. Our aim is to grow confident, self-aware individuals who are proud of themselves and their school.
KEY FOCUS AREAS INCLUDE:
• Leadership development through the Prep Pal Programme, school, sport captaincy and mentorship
• Signature events like Grade 7 Market Day and Blokes’ Days
• Grade excursions that strengthen peer bonds and celebrate the final year of primary school
Our motto comes alive here: “From small beginnings, better fortune follows.”
